80-year-old building kills at least 24 people.
This official figure is contradicted by the numerous families who were standing by the end of the day at the foot of the burnt construction, desperate to hear from their missing relative.
If some onlookers became heroes by saving some of the victims trying to escape the flames by jumping from the 4th and 5th floor, we will recall better the under-equipment and the lack of training of the - rather old - firemen.

23/03/10 à 14h : Au coeur de Calcutta, dans la rue que certains appellent les Champs Elysees de Calcutta, un violent incendie dévorant les étages supérieurs d'un immeuble de plus de 80 ans coute la vie à 24 personnes, officiellement.
Les nombreuses familles qui restent au pied du batiment jusqu'au soir dans l'espoir d'avoir des nouvelles d'un disparu.
Si certains badauds ont fait preuve d'héroisme en receptionnant des victimes de l'incendie qui ont sauté des 4e et 5e étage, on retiendra surtout l'image d'équipes d'intervention dépassés, mal coordonnés, mal équipés et souvent trop vieux.
